Open-Source Development: UI/UX Design & Frontend Development

A dark-mode task manager and time tracker, built by a four-person open-source team — accounts, full task CRUD, categorisation, a built-in timer, and stats. Scored 100%.

01

Project Context

Clockwise was my first major open-source project: a four-person team building a task manager that lets users create accounts, run full CRUD on their tasks, categorise them, run a timer, and view stats on how their time is actually spent. I led project management, UI/UX design and frontend development.

02

Design Philosophy

The design leans into a dark-mode aesthetic with vibrant blue and green gradients for visual interest, deliberately excluding user-created categories to keep the interface sleek and modern rather than cluttered with edge cases.

Design Decisions

What's actually going on

Thumb-rule reachability

Every interactive element was placed to be reachable with one hand, a deliberate usability call for an app meant to be opened dozens of times a day.

A clear font hierarchy

A defined type hierarchy guides the eye through the interface, so the information that matters most, active timers, task status, is always the easiest to find.

White space as a feature

Generous white space keeps the dark, gradient-heavy interface from feeling busy, focusing attention on the essential elements rather than the decoration around them.

Consistency and accessibility by default

Buttons, icons and navigation patterns stay consistent throughout to flatten the learning curve, with high contrast between text and background built in from the start for accessibility.

A Firebase backend built for real-time

Firebase powers secure, real-time data storage, so time entries and progress update instantly, layered with customisable project categories, visual time-spent reports, and task reminders.

Takeaway

The team's work paid off with a perfect 100% score, a result of effective collaboration and a genuine, practical application of UI/UX principles rather than theory alone. Building Clockwise deepened my understanding of mobile app development, responsive design and animation, and working within an open-source structure added a layer of real-world complexity that made the project genuinely rewarding.
